New Year in a New Light

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! In one way to me, it seems a little crazy we’re already starting another year, yet in another, it does feel about that time…

Looking ahead into a new year tends to seem like a fresh start, doesn’t it? Often we make New Year’s resolutions, set goals for the year, and put extra effort into planning things and setting routines. I don’t know about you, but whenever I’ve made resolutions or set goals, they don’t last the entire year, which is partly why I don’t do that any more. I do have some things I’d like to work on or change this year, but to me, they aren’t really New Year’s resolutions.

While a new year is like a fresh start and a seemingly good time to form new habits, it’s not the only time we can or should set goals and try harder. Just because we fail at the goals we made for ourselves two or three months into the year, doesn’t mean we should give up for the rest of the year!

I think going into a new month is a good “fresh start” for things too, like forming new habits (such as flossing your teeth every day or stretching a few times a week). But even still, you don’t have to wait til the beginning of a month to start working towards your goals and aspirations. Every day is a new chance to do better. Each new morning is a gift from God, and it’s a waste to wait around for a new month or year -or even week, really- to start working on yourself and becoming a better person. We aren’t guaranteed another year. Another month. Another week, or even day, to live life.

I’m not saying resolutions at the beginning of a new year are a bad thing, but when you fail them and give up, or wait around for the new year to start working on bettering your life or self, that’s what I think is the bad thing.

Maybe this year your New Year’s resolution can be to treat each day like a fresh start! I’ve mentioned this quote of L.M. Montgomery’s before, but I’d like to say it again here: “Tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet.”

I know it may be less motivating to join a class or rearrange your room or whatever your “someday” aspirations are in the middle of a week, which makes sense (I know I need to start taking my vitamin D again like I’m supposed to, which has been in the back of my mind for a while now!), but I just wanted to encourage you to not wait. You have a life worth living!

I hope you all have a great new year! Thanks for coming by!
