1. What are some traditions that you and your family have leading up to the holidays? And what’s something new that you want to try this month?
The tradition that stands out most to me is the night my family decorates for Christmas – we put up the tree and decorate it together and usually have pizza and watch a Christmas movie together! It’s such a fun and special time as a family.
I don’t know if you’d call this a tradition, but this year I’ve been trying not to get caught up in or distracted by everything the world has made Christmas to be about, and instead taking on the season in a more calm, undistracted way. For example, I haven’t put an emphasis on things like shopping or listening to secular Christmas music this year like I may have in the past. Not that I’m totally against Christmas-themed music and buying gifts for loved ones, but I want to start trying to not be so busy with Christmas prep in December and focusing on things that aren’t important to the reason I celebrate.
2. What’s your favorite Christmas recipe, food, or drink?
One of my all-time favorite desserts at one of the family Christmas get-togethers is my aunt’s puppy chow!
(I also really like the cinnamon rolls we have for breakfast on Christmas.)
3. Every Christmas is different, and some years come with unexpected twists. But if you could have the perfect Christmas, what would the day look like for you?
Probably a nice, slow day in at home with the family, doing our morning traditions and then enjoying our gifts, reading, watching a Christmas movie, and hanging out together. (At least that’s the mood I’m in this year!)
4. What are some of your favorite winter activities? (e.g. caroling, sledding, drinking hot cocoa)
Staying in! Lol! Watching the snow fall from inside the warm house, reading, doing puzzles, watching winter-y movies; though I do like going out and looking at lights… (-;
5. Do you decorate? How?
A little. Mostly just the living room with the family when we put up the tree and stockings.
6. What is your favorite Christmas song or hymn? Why is it your favorite?
I love “How Many Kings” by Downhere. It’s such a beautiful song and is about what we’re truly meant to celebrate at this time of year. It’s such a touching reminder of Christ’s love for us.
7. What’s a gift or experience you’re really wishing for this Christmas? And what’s your favorite gift to give others?
Honestly, I’ve had a hard time thinking of things to ask for this year! Which is a good thing, I guess… I do want a specific book series though, but I won’t be devastated if I don’t get it! (-;
I like to get my family whatever is on their list because it’s something they want. I like surprising them sometimes, too, but I usually stay on the safe side with things they asked for.
8. Describe some of your favorite Christmas memories. 🙂
One fun one is when my sister got a keyboard for Christmas and a bunch of us cousins danced around by the lit-up tree to the music programmed into it! I’m sure there are a bunch of other great memories I could come up with, but that’s the first one that came to mind!
9. What is your favorite Christmas-y book? Movie?
This isn’t a Christmas book, but I loved the Christmas in Little House on the Prairie where Mr. Edwards shows up even though the Ingalls didn’t expect he’d be able to cross the creek, and he brought them all gifts! The gifts were such special treats for them, but to us today they wouldn’t be much at all, and it’s just so touching and a good reminder of how thankful we should be for our blessings. I can’t think of any actual Christmas books I’ve read, though…
As far as a movie, I don’t know if I have one favorite. I still like quite a few from my childhood, including VeggieTales’ “The Star of Christmas,” “Barbie in a Christmas Carol,” and “Samantha, an American Girl Holiday.” (I also like “Molly, and American Girl on the Home Front” and “Felicity, an American Girl Adventure” at this time of year because they all have good Christmas scenes!! They’re such good movies and the Christmas parts are so touching and emotional! <3 ) I also would consider myself somewhat of a Hallmark girlie, but mostly just for older ones. The ones I’ve deemed my personal “classics” include “Snow Bride,” “Once Upon a Holiday,” and “A Very Merry Mix-Up.”
10. List ten words to that encapsulate the feel of Christmas for you.
Love, peace, joy, family, fun, memories, blessings, comfort, nostalgia, meaningful
11. In your own words, what is the meaning of Christmas?
God’s love and gift of salvation.
