Tips on Modesty for Summer
With warmer weather upon us, it’s that time of year we start shedding the bulky layers of coats, sweaters, sweatshirts, and the like, replacing them with smaller, lighter items. How much smaller and thinner to go depends on you, though. I know cropped tops are pretty much everywhere you look, even in the cooler months, but these and other more revealing summertime articles aren’t the only options out there. There are plenty of ways to be stylish and modest at the same time!

I’m ok with wearing tank tops, personally, and don’t think they’re all immodest. However, there are a few personal guidelines I go by when choosing what summertime tops to go around in. One, I don’t show my bra straps. (Actually, I try not to show any part of my bra no matter what I’m wearing, including sports bras.) So if a tank top has thinner straps, I either wear a strapless bra or a cardigan or jacket with the top. I also try not to wear deeper v-necks or tight, form-fitting shirts, or anything with cutouts in the torso, even if there is tan material covering the actual skin.
I don’t wear cropped tops or anything with an open back, as they don’t fit my views of modesty, unless I wear a camisole under it. That gets hot, though, which ends up being counterproductive. It’s not that I’m ashamed of my body or would feel uncomfortable with showing a bit of midriff, but I don’t want to compromise my convictions.
I do not like Bermuda shorts. I just don’t think they’re very cute or look good on me. I don’t wear short shorts, though, either, for modesty reasons, so I go in the middle and wear midis. If you like Bermudas, though, go for it! In addition to Bermudas, I also don’t like capris, but that’s just a personal preference that has nothing to do with my convictions. And if I don’t want to wear denim, which is one of my favorite materials for pants, I’ll wear athletic shorts. I wear athletic shorts both out and to bed in the summer! So these are good summertime alternatives to short shorts and biker shorts.
I think some women who wear immodest swimsuits would excuse their choices with the defense that it’s a bathing suit, so of course it would be more revealing. While I wouldn’t wear a regular outfit as tight or short as my bathing suits, I also believe it isn’t necessary to show cleavage or wear cheeky bottoms or anything like that. I know it may be a bit harder to find suits with good coverage, but they are out there. You just have to look! You don’t have to wear a one piece to be a modest swimmer (or sun tanner). In fact, even a one piece doesn’t quite qualify as modest to me, unless there’s a skirt attached. I get tankini tops and boy shorts or swim skirts, which I don’t think are too hard to find. There are also really cute swim dresses!

A couple tips for wearing white clothes that are a bit see-through: Wear tan undergarments! Not white! The white still shows through. Tan isn’t as noticeable. I also wear my hair down if I think my bra is a little visible, which helps a lot, I think. If you’re needing some extra coverage for the undergarments when wearing a dress, a slip will help, even if it’s white. And don’t wear thin, white outfits out in the rain if you want to preserve your modesty!
Don’t feel like you have to look like all the other girls this summer, ladies! You be you, stick to your convictions, but don’t be afraid to learn and grow and change for the better!
