How to Create Your Own Style
Have you found your own style in fashion yet? Have you always had your own style but have been wanting to change it up a bit? Having trouble figuring out where to begin? I think I’ve got some ideas to get you started!
Idea #1 Evaluate what you already have. Take all of your clothes and lay them out. Ask yourself questions like these: “What do I wear the most?” “What do I wear the least?” “What is most practical?” “Why have I been holding onto this item all this time and never wear it?” “What are my favorite pieces?” Now would be a good time to get rid of anything that’s taking up space in your dresser. Then, see what’s left. What is missing? Is there anything you’ve been wanting to add to your wardrobe? Some more skirts? A black blazer? Low-rise jeans? After going through your clothes, make a list of things you would like to add. Note what colors you do or don’t already have, and other details like that.

Idea #2 Think about what your favorite outfits are. What you feel your best in. What makes you feel cute and confident. Look back at pictures of yourself and take note of what you did or didn’t like in what you were wearing. What do you get complimented on? What makes the outfit stand out? What could that particular outfit do without?

Idea #3 Think about what kind of styles you like on other people. Do you have a friend who’s always wearing such unique, retro accessories? Is there a celebrity who looks a little like you and you admire their classy outfits? Look online for some outfit inspo if you’re having a hard time coming up with ideas of the kind of style you like. There are online quizzes that might help you figure out what your type of style is too (e.g., boho, classic, grunge, etc.). And make sure you don’t just look for what’s trending right now! Your style is about what suits you. Make it unique. Why would you want to look like everyone else?

Idea #4 Go shopping. After you have a list of a few things to look for, get out there! Visit some shops you’ve never been to. Go to outlet stores, thrift shops, and stores you haven’t been to in a while. Remember that trying new things is a good thing! It’s fun and adds adventure to your life. Take a friend if you’d like! And it’s ok to stick to a budget. That should help be one of your deciding factors when you’re needing to narrow down choices of what to bring home.

Look for what is on your list. Try a style of an item (like a blouse or a romper, for example) in a variety of colors and sizes. Try on some pieces that you wouldn’t normally pick up. Try on a lot of clothes! Think about what you have at home that would match what you’re trying on. Try tucking in tops to see if they would look better that way. Sit down in the clothes you’re trying. Bend over in them. Are there any gaps? Holes? Anything showing underneath that you don’t want to be seen? Get your friend’s opinion on your potential outfits, and take photos of yourself in the mirror for future reference. Make a “definitely” stack, a “maybe” stack, and a “no way” stack. Be sure to hang your “no’s” up on the rack outside the fitting room or turn them in to an employee when you’re finished!

Look for not only clothes, but accessories too. Bags, belts, hair clips, jewelry, shoes, hats, and more can give an outfit a whole new look! Wear a t-shirt and jeans and add a belt, earrings, and cute shoes and you’ll see what I mean!

Here are a few more questions to consider: Is there a certain neckline you think looks better on you than another? For myself, I prefer a more open neckline like a v-neck because a high neckline isn’t as flattering to my face shape. Is there a color that really brings out your eyes? If you have blue eyes, a blue shirt would do the trick! Is there a certain era that inspires your style? I’d have to say early 2000’s does it for me. Is there a theme in your Pinterest board? Maybe princess-y dresses outnumber the rest of your pins? Is there a certain type of shoe that you’d like to try? Does a certain color complement your skin, hair, and eye tones? I know a couple girls who look so good in yellow! Are snug-fitting clothes or slouchy fits your thing? I think skinny jeans and a loose sweatshirt or sweater look good together! Is there a certain brand you’re drawn to? If so, what is it that you notice and like about the products?

Finding your special style may take some time and effort, and it’s possible it will continue to change over the years, but I think that what you choose to wear tells a bit about you and is like an expression of yourself. I like to be comfortable in my clothes, but also cute, and not look like a lazy bum. I most often feel better when I’m in cute jeans and a t-shirt than when I wear my pjs around the house. Apart from wanting to be comfortable and feel good in my clothes, I like to look presentable. I don’t wear lounge pants out and about, although I know it’s trendy right now. That style can look cute if done right, but it can also give the impression of laziness, or that the person just wants to be as comfortable as they can and not care about how they look or are viewed by others, or that’s all they own. To me, even a dress can be comfortable. It doesn’t have to be tight, but it also doesn’t have to be lounge-looking either. Generally, I don’t advise caring what others think, but I feel that it’s simply good manners to take care of your appearance and dress appropriately for any occasion, even if it’s only grocery shopping.

I hope this was a good place to start as you’re trying to find your own unique wardrobe. Be bold and creative! Seriously, don’t be afraid of what others might (or might not) think of you. If you like an outfit, that’s what matters. (-: And although your clothes can be an expression of yourself, remember that they don’t define you! Clothes are only a material thing of this world and we don’t need bigger wardrobes to be happy.
