Finding Your Hobbies
I have so many hobbies and I love them all! Some of them I’ve been into since I was very young, and some I’ve started as I’ve gotten older. Sometimes I feel that I don’t even have time to pursue them all! Today I want to help you find what you enjoy, if you haven’t found your special hobbies yet.
Perhaps you’ve outgrown some hobbies, have hobbies but don’t realize they’re hobbies, or want to expand your list of hobbies. Whatever your case is, there are tons of options out there to try! Think about what you like to do. What you’re interested in. Do you like arts and crafts? Were you interested in learning to play a specific instrument as a child but never had the opportunity? Do you like to get outside and be active?
If you enjoy time at home alone or maybe somewhere quiet in nature, some activities to look into would include reading books, writing poems, stories, or songs, painting, drawing, baking, cooking, cleaning (yes, it’s a thing!), sewing, knitting, crocheting, playing piano or guitar, putting together puzzles, designing fashion, making jewelry, making home decor, etc. etc. etc!!
If you enjoy getting outside, you might like to go hiking, camping, rock climbing, bicycling, kayaking, swimming, fishing, hunting, surfing, snorkeling, rock collecting, bird watching, kite flying, tree climbing, swinging, jumping on a trampoline, going to the zoo, or playing an outdoor sport!
Maybe you like doing group activities, meeting new people, and getting out of the house. Here are some ways to do just that: Join a rec sports league, grab some friends and go shopping, take dance classes, try new restaurants, visit museums or aquariums, go paint some pottery, jump at a trampoline park, go bowling, shoot some hoops, play cornhole, go go-karting!
Taking classes and joining clubs is a great way to enjoy hobbies, learn new skills, and make some friends with people who have similar interests! Whether it’s a one-time cooking class, a book club at your local library, or a church softball league, there are opportunities all around to try new things and have fun doing what you love! One idea I have for you to find inspiration is to visit a store like Hobby Lobby and peruse the aisles! There’s something there for everyone! Another way to find a hobby is by asking your friends what their hobbies are, and ask them if they are involved in any groups or activities. Search the internet for what’s out there in your community too; I’ve done that and it’s proven successful! Or maybe even try creating a group of your own!
Hobbies are a great way to relax, unwind, have fun, give you time to think (or distract you from thinking!), make connections in the community, and more. We all need a break now and again. Of course, I wouldn’t encourage spending an excessive amount of time on your hobbies, where it would consistently interfere with providing for yourself, spending time with your loved ones, and so on, but who knows? Maybe pursuing a hobby would lead to a new career, the meeting of your future spouse, or creating something that would influence generations to come!
